Carnelian

The chalcedony of pharaonic seals

Carnelian is orange to red chalcedony, coloured by finely dispersed iron oxides. Engraved as seals for five millennia, it may be the most used stone of all antiquity — because it is tough, translucent, and because sealing wax does not stick to it.

Etymology

From the Latin cornu, horn, or cornum, the cornel cherry — the red fruit of the dogwood, whose colour is close.

Formation, geology & history

Composition and colour

Like all chalcedonies, carnelian is a felt of microscopic silica fibres. Its colour comes from dispersed particles of hematite and goethite, redder the more the iron is oxidised and concentrated. A pale carnelian heated becomes redder: the treatment, practised since Indian antiquity, converts yellow goethite into red hematite. It is stable, undetectable and considered normal on the market. Sard, its close relative, is simply browner; sard and carnelian differ by shade, not by nature.

Five thousand years of glyptics

Tombs of the Indus civilisation yield acid-etched carnelian beads from as early as 2600 BC. The Egyptians made scarabs, tjet amulets and inlays from it — Tutankhamun's mask contains some. The Romans cut their signet-ring intaglios from it: carnelian offers the perfect compromise between hardness sufficient to hold engraved detail and absence of cleavage so it does not chip under the burin. It also has the distinctive property of not adhering to hot wax, decisive for a seal. This continuity of use, from Sumer to the Renaissance, is unique in the history of gems.

The market today

Indian Gujarat remains the historic centre of carnelian cutting, with workshops in Khambhat active since antiquity. The stone costs little and works well: cabochons, beads, cameos, turned objects. Prized pieces are a deep translucent orange-red, even, with no milky zones. Beware of grey agates dyed bright orange, very common in cheap beads: the colour is too saturated and concentrates in the porous layers.

How to recognise it

  • Warm translucency against the lightA true carnelian glows a reddish orange when held in front of a lamp, with softly nuanced lighter zones.
  • Internal cloudsThe colour shows gentle variation and milky veils, never a flat tone. Perfect uniformity betrays glass or dye.
  • Hardness 7It scratches glass. Orange calcite or aragonite, often sold as carnelian, are scratched by a knife.

Imitations, treatments & confusions

  • Dyed agateThe most common: grey agate steeped in an iron nitrate bath. Colour too uniform and vivid, harsh contrasts between layers, an almost fluorescent orange.
  • Orange glassRound bubbles under the loupe, immediate warmth, moulding seams on beads, an over-smooth lustre.
  • Resin and plasticVery light, scratched by a fingernail, dull-sounding. Common in bazaar necklaces imitating antique beads.

Frequently asked questions

Natural carnelian or dyed agate?

Hold it to the light: carnelian shows clouds and a soft gradient; dyed agate reveals sharp bands with abrupt saturation contrasts between layers.

Carnelian or sard?

Purely a question of shade: carnelian leans orange and red, sard towards chocolate brown. Same mineral, same formula, no difference in value.

Why did the Romans use it for seals?

Three reasons combined: hard enough to hold the engraving, no cleavage so it does not chip under the burin, and above all hot wax does not stick to it — the seal releases cleanly.
